Lionel Messi reportedly clashed with Barcelona team-mate Ousmane Dembele in the wake of the club’s Champions League defeat to Roma.
Barcelona lost 3-0 to Roma at the Stadio Olympico last night in a huge Champions League upset. The Catalan giants were second-best throughout the tie and Messi, as club talisman, disappointed. The Argentina international has hit 39 goals across all competitions but his fine form has dropped off since the turn of the year.
Dembele, meanwhile, was left out for Barcelona despite costing them £120million back in the summer. And Spanish outlet Don Balon report Lionel Messi clashed with the France international at the final whistle. Dembele has struggled for Barcelona ever since his Dortmund move.
Ernesto Valverde chose to leave the wing wizard out from the start and, when he came on, he failed to make an impact. Valverde’s decision to leave Dembele out has increased uncertainty surrounding his Barcelona future. And Don Balon say Messi called out the 20-year-old after the game.
The Barcelona talisman reportedly expressed his anger at Dembele over his attitude and temperament. Dembele, though, is said to be livid at Valverde for failing to give him the chance to shine. Meanwhile, the Barcelona boss has apologized following the Roma defeat.
“We had no response, everything went for them and for us we struggled to build our play,” he said.”
“I am responsible absolutely, I am the visible head of the team and it was down to me.”
“With their pressure it forced us to knock balls long, we became disjointed and we were not able to win the second ball.”
“When you lose and the opposition are better then the analysis is often extreme. They [Roma] were strong, physical and we had a lot of problems.”
“Seasons are long and to win a competition is not easy, with only one winning.”
“We know how disappointing this will be for the fans and us, we wanted to play a semifinal, this is football.”
