One of Wenger’s main priorities this year was to re-sign Mesut Ozil, and he successfully made it happen. Unfortunately, it came at a very high cost.
On Ozil’s previous contract, he was being paid £140,000 a week. Under his new contract, he’s now making £350,000 a week. That’s an increase of more than 150%. Not bad for Ozil.
But as they say, one man’s gain is another man’s loss, because Ozil’s massive deal could now jeopardize Arsenal’s ability to re-sign two key players: Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck.
A report by the Daily Mail suggests that given the clubs current financial standing, it may be unable to re-sign Ramsey and Welbeck. Ramsey is currently being paid £110,000 a week, and Welbeck is at £70,000 a week. Both of their contracts end this Summer and after watching Mesut Ozil receive a 150% pay increase, they will also be looking to receive a huge bump in pay as well, something that the board and Wenger are unlikely to entertain.
